Just Clean It: Cleaning and disinfecting compounding areas
Surfaces in compounding areas are a major source of microbial contamination of compounded sterile preparations (CSPs). Therefore, scrupulous attention must be paid to cleaning and disinfection.
Cleaning is a process that results in the removal of contaminants from objects and surfaces using water, detergents, surfactants, solvents, and/or other chemicals.
Disinfection is a process of destroying microorganisms. It must be done for areas to be sterile.
Cleaning and disinfecting the surfaces in sterile compounding areas must occur on a regular basis. It must be repeated when spills occur; when surfaces, floors, and walls are visibly soiled; and when microbial contamination in known to have been, or is suspected of having been introduced into the compounding areas.
